Oil on Canvas
244.24 × 284 cm / 96.16 × 111.81 in
Created during a two-year residency in Sicily, this series of works draws inspiration from the region's hidden architectural and geological landscapes. Emerging from time spent exploring secluded sanctuaries, coral caves, and the weathered surfaces of Trapani's historic stone structures, the works investigate the relationship between concealment and revelation, protection and emergence.
The monumental scale of the paintings reflects the imposing walls and deep shadows of these spaces, while their layered surfaces echo the porous textures of coral and limestone shaped by centuries of wind, salt, and sea. Beneath seemingly austere exteriors lies a rich and intricate interior world—an enduring presence held within stone, cavity, and reef.
Coral serves as both material reference and metaphor throughout the series. Formed through the accumulation of countless living organisms, it embodies ideas of memory, resilience, and collective growth. The works mirror this process, building complex visual fields through any months and layers of mark-making, colour, and form, suggesting hidden networks and submerged histories.
Together, the paintings explore the possibility of inner expansion: the transition from enclosure to openness, from darkness to illumination, and from the visible surface to the deeper life held within.
